Some tips for the Host:

Whenever possible, keep your gathering small enough to allow you to talk for a few minutes with each of your guests individually.

For a sit-down, if you're not assigning exact seating, at least provide a specific table for each of your guests. We all relax and enjoy when we know there's a place for us.

Having a cocktail party? Spend some time introducing people to each other - an ice-breaking host is a well-loved host.
